The new building, provisionally named the Living Centre, features a design incorporating planting to create a truly green building that takes inspiration from the natural environment and respects both the historic and modern buildings aound the site.
The aim is to create walls which have a vertical park-like feel to bring greenery back into the town centre. The new building will have a 'very good' or 'excellent' BREEM rating, which will reflect best practice in sustainable design and construction. The building is planned to house a retail outlet, cafe and contact point as well as office space for businesses.
The site forms a vital gateway into the heart of the town centre from the proposed new bus station and it is hoped that redevelopment of the site can create an attractive pedestrian route into the town centre as well as benefiting retailers and market traders.
These plans are subject to planning permission, with a planning application likely to be submitted in July. Demolition of the current Queen’s Head building was completed in April.
Mansfield’s Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton, commented: “Mansfield District Council is committed to providing a clean, green and pleasant environment.”
”I am sure the designs for the new Living Centre will enhance Mansfield’s Centre and provide an iconic gateway to the businesses and services in that area.”
“Not only visibly striking, the building will also be environmentally sustainable and reflect best practice in its construction.”
